What Is Chronological Age?
Chronological age is the amount of time elapsed from birth to a given test date. Unlike biological age — an estimate of physiological health — chronological age is fixed and verifiable: it depends only on the calendar. It is typically recorded as years, months and days, and for clinical use as Y;M (years;months), e.g. 6;4 means 6 years, 4 months.
Because different months have 28–31 days and leap years add February 29, a simple “days ÷ 365” estimate drifts. The correct method is calendar subtraction with borrowing, which this calculator uses.
Why Precision Matters
For most everyday questions “how old are you?” rounded years are enough. For professional decisions they are not.
- Speech-language & OT: Tests like CELF-5 and PPVT-5 assign a child to a 3-month normative band based on age on the test date. A one-day error can shift the band and change standard scores.
- School psychology: WISC-V and similar batteries use exact age to select norms. This is why the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and Pearson assessment manuals stress calculating on the actual test date.
- Education: Kindergarten cutoff and grade placement often compare total months, not just years.
- Pediatrics: Developmental milestone screening from the American Academy of Pediatrics uses months and days for infants.

How to Use This Calculator
- Enter Date of Birth — MM DD YYYY. Use the certified birth certificate date.
- Enter Test / Reference Date — the date age is being determined. It defaults to today; change it to any past or future assessment date.

- Copy — use Copy Y;M to paste like 6;4 into Q-global or IEP reports, or Copy Y M D for narrative text.
Chronological Age Formula — The Borrowing Method
Chronological Age = Test Date − Date of Birth
Step 1: If test days < birth days, borrow days from the prior month. Step 2: If test months < birth months, borrow 12 months (1 year). Remaining years, months and days are the exact age. Leap years and month lengths are applied automatically.
Approximate formulas like (years×365)+(months×30)+days are not used here — they ignore real month lengths and drift by several days. The borrowing method is the clinical standard described by Pearson and Brigance.
Worked Example
Birth: 30 Nov 2016 | Test: 7 Aug 2025

- Days: 7 < 30, so borrow 31 days from July → days = 7+31−30 = 8, months = 8−1 = 7.
- Months: 7 < 11, so borrow 12 months → months = 7+12−11 = 8, years = 2025−1−2016 = 8.
- Result: 8 years, 8 months, 8 days → SLP 8;8 → 104 total months → 3,172 total days (check with calculator).
Simpler case: 10 Oct 2010 to 10 Apr 2026 = 15 years, 6 months, 0 days → 15;6 (186 total months).
Understanding Your Results
- Years / Months / Days: complete units since birth. This is the reportable chronological age.
- Y;M SLP format: years;months, rounded down to months (days omitted) — required for most assessment norms. Use the copy button.
- Total months: all months lived — e.g., 8;8 = 8×12+8 = 104 months. Useful for early-childhood grade placement and Brigance screens.
- Total days / weeks / hours: elapsed time, helpful for context and for verifying against other tools.
- Born on / Next birthday: day of week for records and countdown for planning.
- Feb 29 birthdays: in non-leap years the next-birthday math follows UTC noon logic; verify against local policy if your district observes Feb 28 vs Mar 1.

Accuracy, Assumptions & Limitations
- Uses the Gregorian calendar with real month lengths and leap-year rules; dates handled as UTC noon to avoid timezone drift.
- Result assumes the birth certificate date is correct; time-of-day is not collected — two births on the same date share the same chronological age.
- Not a biological-age or developmental-age estimate; do not use total days ÷ 365.25 as a clinical substitute for borrowed Y;M;D.
- Corrected age for prematurity is not auto-calculated — adjust manually per your manual (typically until age 2).
- For official filings always verify against the original record; this tool is a convenience aid, not a legal authority.
Professional note
If you need adjusted age for a premature infant: Corrected age = Chronological age − weeks premature. Example: born 6 weeks early with chronological age 10 months → corrected age ≈ 8.5 months. Follow the specific assessment manual for when corrected age stops being used.
