Calculate your assignment grade from points earned and total possible points. This calculator converts your score into a percentage, letter grade (A+ through F), and GPA points on a 4.0 scale. Supports multiple assignments for cumulative grade tracking.
Points-based cumulative grade analysis
Assumes equal weighting for all assignments. Check your syllabus for weighted category instructions.
An assignment grade calculator converts your raw score into a percentage grade. Enter the points you earned and the total possible points, and the calculator divides the two, multiplies by 100, and displays your percentage along with the corresponding letter grade and GPA points.
Students use this tool to track performance on homework, quizzes, projects, lab reports, essays, and exams. Teachers use it to verify grading accuracy. Parents use it to understand a student's academic standing.
Converts any score (e.g., 45/50) into a percentage (90%) instantly.
Maps your percentage to a letter grade on the standard US 13-level scale.
Shows corresponding GPA points on a 4.0 scale for academic planning.
The basic formula for calculating an assignment grade is straightforward:
Grade % = (Points Earned ÷ Total Points Possible) × 100
When you have multiple assignments, the cumulative grade is calculated by summing all points earned and dividing by all points possible:
Cumulative % = (Σ Points Earned ÷ Σ Total Points) × 100
For example, if you scored 45/50 on Assignment 1 and 18/20 on Assignment 2: (45+18) / (50+20) = 63/70 = 90%.
Most schools in the United States, Canada, and other countries using US-style grading use a letter grade system. The table below shows the standard 13-level scale with GPA points on a 4.0 scale.
| Percentage Range | Letter Grade | GPA Points | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 97-100% | A+ | 4.0 | Passing |
| 93-96% | A | 4.0 | Passing |
| 90-92% | A- | 3.7 | Passing |
| 87-89% | B+ | 3.3 | Passing |
| 83-86% | B | 3.0 | Passing |
| 80-82% | B- | 2.7 | Passing |
| 77-79% | C+ | 2.3 | Passing |
| 73-76% | C | 2.0 | Passing |
| 70-72% | C- | 1.7 | Passing |
| 67-69% | D+ | 1.3 | Passing |
| 63-66% | D | 1.0 | Passing |
| 60-62% | D- | 0.7 | Passing |
| 0-59% | F | 0.0 | Failing |
This calculator considers 60% (D-) as the minimum passing grade. Some institutions use different thresholds — always verify with your course syllabus.
This calculator uses the total points method, where every point carries equal weight. Many courses use weighted categories instead — for example, tests worth 40%, homework 30%, and the final exam 30%.
If your course uses weighted categories, calculate your average within each category first, then apply the weights:
Weighted Grade = Σ (Category Average × Category Weight)
If your test average is 85% (weight 40%) and your homework average is 92% (weight 60%):
Weighted Grade = (85 × 0.4) + (92 × 0.6) = 34 + 55.2 = 89.2%
For simple point-based grading (no category weights), use the calculator above to add all assignments and get your cumulative grade.
| Points Earned | Total Points | Percentage | Letter Grade | GPA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 45 | 50 | 90% | A- | 3.7 |
| 18 | 20 | 90% | A- | 3.7 |
| 37 | 40 | 92.5% | A- | 3.7 |
| 28 | 35 | 80% | B- | 2.7 |
| 42 | 50 | 84% | B | 3.0 |
| 38 | 50 | 76% | C | 2.0 |
| 24 | 40 | 60% | D- | 0.7 |
| 58 | 100 | 58% | F | 0.0 |
You scored 45 points on an assignment worth 50 points.
45 ÷ 50 = 0.90 × 100 = 90% — Letter: A- | GPA: 3.7
Assignment 1: 45/50 | Assignment 2: 18/20 | Assignment 3: 37/40
(45+18+37) ÷ (50+20+40) = 100/110 = 90.91% — Letter: A- | GPA: 3.7
This calculator uses the standard US 13-level letter grade scale and equal-weight (total points) methodology. Grade thresholds and GPA mappings may differ by institution.
For official transcripts, final grade calculations, or formal academic records, always use your institution's official grading policy and verification tools.
Divide the points you earned by the total possible points, then multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 50 equals (45 / 50) x 100 = 90%. The calculator above does this automatically and also gives you the letter grade and GPA points.
